-

A Milwaukee police officer fatally shot a 49-year-old man who was wielding, and had fired, a gun, police say.

On Sunday, May 30, 2021, at approximately 10:29 p.m., Milwaukee Police officers “were dispatched to a shots fired incident on the 2700 block of S. 29th Street. The caller stated that an individual was firing shots,” Milwaukee police said in a statement.

Police say the man was firing shots from a front porch and refused commands to drop the firearm.

The man’s name was not yet released.

Here’s what else police said happened:

Police Found the ‘Armed Individual’ on a Front Porch Firing Shots

“Upon arrival, officers heard shots and observed an armed individual on the front porch. The individual went to the rear porch and fired several more shots. Officers encountered the armed suspect who refused several verbal commands to drop his gun,” they wrote.

“An officer discharged his firearm subsequently striking the suspect. The suspect, a 49-year-old man, sustained fatal injuries. No other officers discharged their firearms and no one else was injured as a result of the gunfire. The suspect’s firearm was recovered.”

Police noted: “The officer involved is a 47-year-old male with over 6 years of service. He was placed on administrative duty as is routine in an officer involved shooting. This is an ongoing investigation. The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team will be investigating this incident. The Waukesha Police Department is the lead agency in the investigation. A community briefing discussing this incident will be released in the future.”
