Thanks to Tony Evers, Your Cash Tips & Overtime Will Still Be Taxed in Wisconsin

Many Wisconsinites are struggling with affordability, but Gov. Tony Evers just made it harder.

The administration is comprised of Evers and Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez, who is running for governor. Evers, in a Friday night veto rampage, vetoed a GOP measure that would have exempted cash tips and overtime from the Wisconsin state income tax.

Evers’ rambling veto message states that he voted the bill because he considered the tax relief “temporary.” Evers also opposed linking the relief to a federal deduction.

Republican Governor Candidate and U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany recently proposed ending state income tax on tips and overtime if he’s elected governor.

The bill was introduced by Senators Jacque, Bradley, Hutton, Cabral-Guevara, Feyen, Nass, Quinn and Tomczyk, cosponsored by Representatives Tusler, Behnke, Green, Gundrum, Kreibich, Maxey, Mursau, Penterman, Piwowarczyk, Tittl, Tranel and Wichgers. Referred to Committee on Agriculture and Revenue.

Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau

This bill creates an income tax exemption for cash tips received by an employee from the customers of the employee’s employer.
Because this bill relates to an exemption from state or local taxes, it may be referred to the Joint Survey Committee on Tax Exemptions for a report to be printed as an appendix to the bill.
