District Attorney Eric Toney, the Republican candidate for attorney journal, slammed socialist governor candidate Francesca Hong’s “disgusting, irresponsible rhetoric” in the wake of the Madison police shooting.
Hong’s virulent anti-law enforcement rhetoric is well-known and longstanding. Not only has she advocated abolishing the police and prisons, but she posted a protester photo on social media on July 23 with a sign that reads, “No more killer cops.”
Toney is running against AG Josh Kaul. “I’m appalled by Francesca Hong’s comments. They’re disgusting, irresponsible rhetoric — fanning the flames before an investigation is finished,” wrote Toney.
“She did this during the Jacob Blake investigation when she called for abolishing the police within hours of the shooting, without the facts. Politicians must let the facts come out, investigations must be swift, and we cannot prejudge situations based on incomplete information for shameless political gain.”

On WISN 1130-AM on Friday, Toney also took aim at AG Josh Kaul, alleging that Kaul knew or had to know that Blake had a knife before Kenosha burned during the 2020 riots. Kaul did not share that information with the public, which erroneously believed lies that Blake was unarmed. Toney believes that Kaul had an obligation to share the information that Kaul had on the weapon to correct misinformation and reduce tensions. Instead, downtown Kenosha was torched, and people ended up losing their lives.
What Did Francesca Hong Say?
Hong rushed to judgment against the officer before an investigation was conducted.
“This state sanctioned violence was an execution,” Hong told the crowd, through a megaphone, as protests erupted. “We no longer can have a system that protects a power and a privilege that puts the pain and lives of armed officers over black people. We can not protect a system that contains to rain harm and terror.” She also called the likely justified shooting an “execution” in a written statement.
Two law enforcement experts, Rep. Jim Piwowarczyk and Waukesha County Sheriff’s Capt. Nick Ollinger, told WRN the shooting of Corey Ruiz was likely legally justified because the Madison police chief revealed that Ruiz cut the officer with a knife during a struggle before the officer shot him.
