Steve Wicklund, Village President of Union Grove and Chair of the Racine County Intergovernmental Cooperation Council, announced today that he is running as a Republican candidate for the Wisconsin State Assembly in District 33. That’s the seat being vacated by Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, who has announced that he is not seeking re-election in November.

“When experienced leaders step back, it doesn’t create a void — it creates a moment,” Wicklund said in a news release. “A moment when those prepared to serve must step forward and defend the principles that make our communities strong.”

Wicklund “has served as Village President of Union Grove with a focus on fiscal discipline, responsible growth, and accountable government. As Chair of the Racine County Intergovernmental Cooperation Council, he works alongside local leaders to strengthen partnerships and protect local decision-making,” his press release said.

“A small-business owner, Wicklund says he has seen firsthand how excessive regulation, rising costs, and government overreach impact working families and employers across southeastern Wisconsin,” it added.

“I’m running as a Republican because I believe in limited government, lower taxes, strong public safety, and defending our constitutional rights,” Wicklund said. “I’ve signed the front of paychecks. I understand accountability. I know what happens when government works — and when it gets in the way.”

Wicklund said his campaign “will focus on advancing conservative principles that promote economic growth, responsible spending, support for law enforcement, and protecting the freedoms of Wisconsin families.

“Madison should work for the people — not control them,” Wicklund said. “I believe in the people of Racine and Walworth Counties, and I’m ready to fight for the values that built this district.”
