Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Deputy Shot Multiple Times, Suspect Dead

The shooting suspect was hiding in a garbage can before shooting the deputy, the sheriff says. After the shooting, the suspect fatally shot himself as officers approached during a search for him.

Update: The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the suspected shooter and the male they found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound were likely the same person.

A Milwaukee County Sheriff’s deputy was shot in the area of S. 64th and Adler. We’ve learned he’s in stable condition after being shot three times.

The shooting suspect fatally shot himself as officers approached during a search. We’ve learned from sources that one suspect is in custody. A second suspect was taken into custody on the morning of January 26 after knocking on doors without a coat in the sub-zero temperatures.

It’s the second time in two weeks that a Milwaukee area law enforcement officer was shot multiple times as violent crime continues to skyrocket in Milwaukee. In both cases, the officers survived.

In a morning news conference, Sheriff Earnell Lucas said that, at 2:08 a.m., a Milwaukee County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to make a traffic stop of a vehicle for a registration violation at West Adler and S. 68th St.

He requested assistance. As deputies were arriving, the driver and passenger of the vehicle fled on foot. The driver was taken into custody after a brief foot pursuit near the on-ramp to I-94 and 68th St., Lucas said. Sheriffs deputies and officers from the West Allis Police Department assisted in a search for the second subject.

Shortly after 3 a.m., a deputy observed a male subject climb out of a garbage bin in the area of W. Adler and 64th St., according to Lucas. A perimeter was reestablished and a subject was encountered in the 6300 block of West Dixon. The subject was approached by a deputy, at which time, the subject produced a firearm and fired at the deputy, striking him in his arms and torso, said Lucas, who added that the deputy’s wounds don’t appear to be life-threatening.

Sheriffs deputies and officers from multiple agencies began a search for the shooting suspect. A shelter-in-place order was issued. During the search, they encountered a male subject crouching down behind a vehicle and issued commands for the subject to cooperate. They heard a single shot and found the subject lying on the ground from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. MPD is conducing independent investigation.

“Investigators have not established whether the subject found dead is connected to the shooting of the deputy,” said Lucas.

In their earlier statement, the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy was shot multiple times during a traffic stop in which the passenger fled on foot.

The deputy was conscious, breathing, and receiving treatment on the scene and was rushed to Froedtert Hospital.

The suspected shooter was described as a black male, skinny build, black T-shirt, with no coat.

Milwaukee Mayoral Candidate Bob Donovan Press Release

Earlier this morning a Milwaukee County Deputy Sheriff was shot in the line of duty. He is currently fighting for his life. Kathy and I are extremely saddened by this news and offer our prayers for this deputy and his family.

This is just one more indication of how dangerous the streets of Milwaukee have become. The brave men and women of law enforcement deserve our support. I am urging the citizens of Milwaukee to show their support for our law enforcement professionals in any way they possibly can, and pray for the speedy recovery of this deputy… and I might add, indeed the recovery of our entire community.
