On the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, Republican Tom Tiffany called for Wisconsin “to require schools to teach students about 9/11, ensuring future generations understand the attacks, the Americans who lost their lives, and the heroism and unity that followed.”
“Twenty-five years ago, America was forever changed when terrorists attacked our country,” said Tiffany. “We must never forget the 2,977 innocent lives taken, the first responders who ran toward danger, the passengers of Flight 93 who fought back, and the Americans who answered the call to serve our country in the years that followed.”
About one-third of Americans “were not yet born when terrorists attacked our country on September 11, 2001. An Associated Press review found that numerous states require 9/11 to be taught in schools. Wisconsin, however, does not. As Wisconsin Public Radio reported this week, state law calls for a “special observance” of September 11, but does not require 9/11 instruction in schools,” Tiffany’s campaign wrote in a news release.
“As the number of Americans with a personal memory of 9/11 grows smaller, our responsibility to teach its history grows greater,” Tiffany continued. “Future generations must understand what happened on September 11 so that America never forgets. Numerous states already require 9/11 to be included in their school curriculum, and Wisconsin should join them.”
Tiffany is competing against Democrat David Crowley for the Wisconsin governorship.
