Tom Tiffany Reminds ‘No Kings’ Protesters That Tony Evers Unilaterally Authorized Raising Property Taxes Until 2425

-

U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany thinks “No Kings” protesters should turn their eye toward the governor’s mansion instead if they are worried about government power.

As “No Kings” protests erupted throughout Wisconsin and the U.S., Tiffany wrote, “Strange that the ‘No Kings’ protestors aren’t outside Gov. Evers’ office after he used his veto pen to single-handedly raise your property taxes for 400 years (until 2425). Guess that kind of power doesn’t bother them.”

This gubernatorial power is unique to Wisconsin, according to the non-partisan Legislative Reference Bureau.

“The Wisconsin governor has the power to partially veto appropriation bills, a power that is unique across all states,” LRB explained.

How Did Tony Evers Manage to Authorize Raising Property Taxes for the Next 400 Years?

What are the details of the infamous Evers’ 400-year veto? He used his partial veto authority “in 2023 authorizing school districts to raise property taxes to bolster their budgets through the year 2425,” wrote WPR, and he did this without voter approval. In November, voters will be asked whether they want to approve a constitutional amendment “to prohibit the governor, in exercising his or her partial veto authority, from creating or increasing or authorizing the creation or increase of any tax or fee,” WPR noted.

Tiffany is running for governor as a Republican. He is a congressman from northwestern Wisconsin, a former campground manager, and a small business owner.

Of course, the “No Kings” protesters also seemingly missed the point that a true King wouldn’t let them protest at all.
