Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old man from Utah, was named as the Charlie Kirk assassin by authorities.

Utah’s governor Spencer Cox said Robinson had made negative comments about Kirk before the shooting and was angry about Kirk’s viewpoints.

The suspect was first named by the New York Post and NBC News, citing law enforcement sources. The Post described him as “a 22-year-old Utah local, Tyler Robinson.” NBC News also identified the suspect as Robinson, citing five anonymous law enforcement sources.

Robinson was identified after family members recognized him from the suspect photos released by law enforcement, according to NBC News.

“It is an attack on all of us. It is an attack on the American experiment. It is an attack on our ideals. This cuts to the very foundation of who we are, of who we have been and who we could be in better times,” Cox said in the news conference.

According to Daily Mail, Robinson is a student at Utah State University.

A law enforcement official told The New York Times that the suspect “was taken into custody in St. George, Utah, near Zion National Park, about 250 miles southwest of the campus where Kirk was killed.” He was taken into custody around 11 p.m. on Sept. 11, according to The Times, which noted that authorities haven’t formally released his name because they are “still in the process of pursuing leads and executing search warrants.”

Authorities have not yet confirmed the name, but President Trump said on Fox & Friends that authorities believe they have the gunman in custody after his father and a minister turned him in. Trump said the minister has ties to law enforcement and reached out to a U.S. marshal he knew.

“I think, with a high degree of certainty, we have him,” Trump told “Fox & Friends.”

“Essentially somebody very close to him turned him in,” Trump added. “Someone that’s very close to him said, ‘That’s him,’ and went to the father. Went to a U.S. marshal…The father convinced the son, this is it.”

Authorities previously released photos of the Kirk assassin.

Trump did not provide a name, but authorities were holding a news conference this morning.

The claim that Tyler Robinson shot Kirk comes after a manhunt for the gunman, who was seen in videos climbing down from a roof and limping through a neighborhood. A rifle was discovered abandoned in the woods.

Kirk was a charismatic intellectual leader of modern conservatism who was shot while engaging in free speech and intellectual debate on a university campus in Utah. The bullet ricocheted into his neck, creating a horrific scene that was captured on multiple citizen videos.

Tributes have flowed in for Kirk, who was remembered for galvanizing a youth movement in America and engaging opponents in civil debate.

“I hope he’s going to be found guilty, and I hope he gets the death penalty. What he did — Charlie Kirk was the finest person and he didn’t deserve this,” Trump said on the television broadcast.

Kash Patel called the arrest “a dedication to good law enforcement being great” and partnerships. He said thousands of tips came in.

Daily Mail now says the dad ran a family-run construction company after falsely reporting that he was a sheriff’s deputy. The mom works for a company giving care to the disabled, the site reported.
