Wauwatosa Carjacking
A man was the victim of an attempted Wauwatosa carjacking on Thursday, and the suspect opened fire at his vehicle when he quickly drove away, police say.
Concerns about crime have escalated in Wauwatosa; the recent strongarm robbery of a man who was blowing snow concerned many residents.
In the latest incident, police told Wisconsin Right Now:
On Feb. 18, 2021, at around 9:30 p.m., officers responded for a report of shots fired and an attempt car-jacking in the area of Ridge Blvd. and North 96 Street.
“The victim advised he was driving from the area of N 60th St/W Burleigh when he observed a black Volkswagen following him,” police wrote in a statement given to Wisconsin Right Now.
“He attempted to evade the Volkswagen by turning into the Ridge Blvd neighborhood. When he stopped for the stop sign at N 96 St/W Wilson Blvd, the Volkswagen pulled up next to him and a subject got out and began to approach his vehicle. The victim believed the subject was going to attempt to steal his vehicle so he quickly drove away.”
As he drove northbound on N. 96th St., he heard three to four gunshots “and believed they were directed at his vehicle. He briefly pulled into a nearby driveway before driving home and contacting police.”
According to the reports, the victim’s 2-year-old child was in the vehicle.
The release continues, “The Volkswagen was located by responding officers and a pursuit was initiated. The pursuit was eventually terminated due to reckless driving by the subjects in the Volkswagen. The vehicle was found abandoned in the 5200 block of N 108th Ct. in the City of Milwaukee. Two juvenile subjects were detained for questioning and later released.”
Police added, “Thankfully no one was injured during the incident. The Wauwatosa Police are increasing patrols in the area and ask that citizens call if they see or hear anything suspicious. This is an ongoing investigation and additional details will be released as they become available. Our investigators are requesting residents in the 9600blk W Ridge Blvd to contact the department if they have surveillance video of the incident.”
