Milwaukee Press Club 'Excellence in Wisconsin Journalism' 2020 & 2021 Award Winners

Wisconsin Right Now Announces Its WINNERS OF THE YEAR for 2025

spot_img

It’s that time of the year again! Now is the time to recognize the people who helped make our state better. They are people who scored victories, who worked hard, who stood out, and who stepped up. They are Wisconsin Right Now’s “winners of the year.”

In no particular order:

Scarlett Johnson and the Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty

Scarlett johnson mequon thiensville recall

Scarlett Johnson, the tireless Moms for Liberty activist from Ozaukee County, defeated a defamation case with the help of the conservative legal warriors at the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty (which remains an incredibly important force for change in this country and state.)

Wisconsin right now“The Wisconsin Court of Appeals ruled in favor of WILL’s client, Scarlett Johnson, a Wisconsin Moms for Liberty activist sued for defamation for criticizing her school district. The Court agreed with WILL’s argument that Scarlett’s posts were statements of opinion that are not provably false and therefore cannot be defamatory,” WILL wrote.

WILL Deputy Counsel, Luke Berg, stated, “Scarlett, like all of us, has the right to question and criticize her government. The defamation lawsuit against her was meritless and should have been promptly dismissed. We are pleased that the Court agreed and that Scarlett can put this distraction behind her.” Had this case gone the other way, it would have had a significant chilling effect on other parents and conservatives in Wisconsin. By fighting onto legal victory, Scarlett and WILL protected many others.

Johnson is affiliated with Moms for Liberty, which also deserves a shout-out. This group of concerned moms was stigmatized and terribly unfairly characterized by the media, which tried to falsely paint them as a hate group. Yet they persevered, and, this year, they’ve been expanding their impact and reach. “Amber Infusino, Misty Gilbert, Joann Koenecke , Scarlett Johnson and ALL Mom’s for Liberty chapters,” wrote one nominator.

Mark Belling, Podcaster

Mark belling.
Mark belling. Belling. Com

We hear that former WISN 1130 AM radio host Mark Belling’s podcast is doing extremely well. The numbers we heard are staggering. His voice is needed. Belling leaving live radio was a loss to radio listeners, of course, but it was a gain to anyone accessing his podcast. The podcast is likely expanding his reach. That makes him a winner.

We expect that we will be able to say the same about Jay Weber next year. For their many contributions to Milwaukee and the state, both Belling and Weber are winners.

The Dash Camera

A dash camera quickly exonerated a heroic Milwaukee police officer and firearm instructor who defended himself when another motorist attacked him on the side of the road. The officer’s quick instincts (did we mention he’s a firearms instructor…) also saved his life. Elijah Wilks’ family should also be commended for immediately telling the public that the shooting was justified and asking for the video – which exonerated the off-duty officer – to be released.

“Elijah pulls out a firearm with his right hand, and that, he’s essentially swinging it in the direction of the off-duty officer. One time. It’s almost like a punch is what actually transpired,” B’Ivory LaMarr, the attorney for the family, said.

“What this family has done is made the difficult decision, while they’re grieving, to put aside their privacy, put aside their grieving to allow again the opportunity for accountability to actually exist where the public can see what they saw. And just try to move past the situation and heal this city,” LaMarr said.

The Redheads: State. Reps. Amanda Nedweski & Barbara Dittrich and Judge Maria Lazar

Amanda nedweski

Whether it was tackling waste in government or being way ahead of the curve on protecting girls’ spaces, state Reps. Amanda Nedweski and Barbara Dittrich were effective and hard-working voices for change.

Nedweski’s office even came up with the fact that Tony Evers was calling mothers inseminated persons. (That makes her staffer Eric Brooks a winner, too).

Amanda Nedweski “is blazing the trails as a newcomer. From bills protecting women’s health and mammogram screening reforms to holding Jill Underly accountable for the mishandling of education records… and let’s not forget I believe her and her staff were the ones that uncovered the inseminated persons fiasco,” a reader who nominated her said.

Barb dittrich

Throughout the years, Dittrich has championed quiet but deeply impactful causes like adoption and mental health. “She has been a staunch supporter of keeping men out of women’s sports. She entered public life when she had a thriving career in the public sector and has faced hatred from the left with strength and grace,” a reader who nominated Dittrich wrote.

Maria lazar
Judge maria lazar

Judge Maria Lazar is throwing her hat into the ring for state Supreme Court in a difficult climate. She’s been an extremely effective judge and voice of common sense on the bench. Yeah, we know she hasn’t won yet, but she’s a winner for taking this on.

These women are feisty warriors. State GOP: Get them front and center as much as possible!

The Wisconsin Young Republicans

Wisconsin right now
Kyle schroeder.

These guys are workhorses. They knock on a LOT of doors. They doubled YR membership statewide, started nine new YR clubs, and hosted the single largest day of action in the spring elections.

They now have YR clubs in all eight congressional districts. In the spring election, 70-plus YRs from 17 different states knocked on over 11,000 doors in one single day. Two of their members were elected to National Leadership at the summer convention – Vice Chair Nik Rettinger and Midwest Regional Chair Kyle Schroeder. They also secured the bid to hold the 2027 YR National Convention in Milwaukee.

State Rep. Sylvia Ortiz-Velez

Sylvia velez-ortiz
State rep. Sylvia velez-ortiz

Rep. Ortiz-Velez is a rare public official in divided America. She has a true independent streak. A Democrat, she crosses over to vote sometimes with Republicans. She is a voice of common sense in a party that has plunged off the extremist cliff. For this, she has been rewarded with an unprecedented attack from her fellow Democratic legislators.

The office of Speaker Robin Vos says that a gun threat accusation lodged by state Rep. Greta Neubauer against Ortiz-Velez (D-Milwaukee) was found NOT credible by the Capitol Police as internal Democratic tensions boil over. For standing strong for her beliefs and community, she has to be a winner of the year.

The Professors: Trevor Tomesh, Shale Horowitz, Robert Feidler, Rossell Gonnering, Brian Volkman, and Benjamin Whitcomb

Trevor tomesh
Trevor tomesh, uw-river falls. (linkedin/uw-river falls)

Think the phrase “conservative professors” is an oxymoron? Think again. It’s just that many of them stay silent out of fear. Not the group above, and it goes without saying that this comes with great courage. Tomesh, a UW-River Falls professor, went viral after calling on the Universities of Wisconsin to condemn the assassination of Charlie Kirk. He has continued to be a classy, thoughtful voice on campus supporting conservative students and urging ideological diversity and debate.

Prof. Shale horowitz.
Prof. Shale horowitz.

Professor Shale Horowitz, of UW-Milwaukee, has spoken courageously against the mistreatment of Jewish students on campus and the outrageous encampment that popped up on UWM’s campus.

Russell gonnering
Russell gonnering

The Wisconsin Association of Scholars released a statement condemning Kirk’s murder and calling on the state’s institutions of higher learning to do the same. The other signatories are Robert Feidler, Rossell Gonnering, Brian Volkman, and Benjamin Whitcomb (and this author). The instructors’ opinions are their own and don’t represent the institutions where they work.

It’s not easy to be a conservative at the UW. It’s even harder to be a vocal one.

Young Female Conservatives: Catie Smiley, Jocelyn Jordan, Jenna Piwowarczyk, and Elizabeth Wolnik

Catie smiley
Catie and margaret smiley.

There are other young people we could list here, too, but this powerful quartet made a difference in the State of Wisconsin. Catie and Jocelyn worked to start Turning Point chapters at their high school and college. They faced major pushback and handled it with great decorum.

Jenna piwowarczyk

Jenna held a series of powerful events through the Young America’s Foundation chapter she started at Concordia. Elizabeth continues to do great work through Americans for Prosperity, as her recent viral video on property taxes proves.

Check out Wolnik’s video here. “Got sticker shock from your most recent property tax bill? Let’s break down Gov. Evers’ 400-year tax hike and why Wisconsinites deserve more accountability for what we’re funding,” she said.

These young people give us hope for the future. They are all engaged in making a positive difference in their communities.

NorthShore Classical Academy & Cheryle Rebholz

It’s not an easy thing to create a school from scratch. But that’s exactly what shooting range/salon owner Cheryle Rebholz and other supporters are doing in Saukville, Wisconsin, and it all stemmed from concerns about testing scores in the public school system. The idea for NorthShore Classical Academy was first sketched on a napkin.

Wisconsin right now

Now, there’s a building, there’s a waiting list, the classrooms are under construction, and a fundraiser the other day drew so much support that $50,000 was raised in about a minute (and then some). Read more here.

The Kenosha County GOP

Wisconsin right now
Kenosha co gop

This remains one of the most effective county GOP parties in the State of Wisconsin. They helped flip the County Board (briefly, but they’re working on flipping it back), the County Executive’s Office (kudos also to Sam Kerkman), the Sheriff’s position AND the DA. Plus, Kenosha County went for Donald Trump in 2024. This wasn’t always the case.

It’s not just the riots. It’s the fact that these folks step up. They run for office. They show up. They’re organized. They’re Sandy Wiedmeyer, Amy Nordloh, Barb Griffin, Ken Wolfe, Patty Dickow, Zach Stock, Brian Gonzales, Pam Mundling, Matt Augustine, Douglas Haney, Sheri Jesiel, Kari O’Keefe, Karen Bichanich, and Erica Millar, among others.

As the WOW erodes, the Kenosha-Racine region becomes even more important.

The Journalists: Cap Times Reporter Danielle DuClos & Independent Journalist Nick Shirley

Danielle duclos
Danielle duclos cap times headshot

We never thought we’d be naming a reporter from the liberal Cap Times one of our winners of the year, but DuClos deserves the honor for her dogged investigative reporting on the DPI’s handling of sexual misconduct cases. Although we don’t think the reporting was perfect, it was gutsy, and we would like to see more of this kind of thing. She used traditional journalistic techniques. Great job.

Danielle DuClos’ series about educator misconduct has had significant and positive rippling effects. The DPI actually has a public database of revoked and surrendered licenses now,” a reader who nominated DuClos wrote.

But it’s the year of the independent journalists as the so-called mainstream media declines in resources and credibility. Thus, it’s important to honor that with a nominee.

For taking a camera to Minnesota and knocking on the doors of Somali daycare centers, independent journalist Nick Shirley is helping redefine the nation’s debate and he’s showing what the new influencer class can accomplish when they get off the Internet and do original reporting. Gutsy stuff.

Kudos to both.

Erika Kirk

Charlie kirk widow
Charlie kirk’s wife erika

For her incredible composure, class, and grit in the wake of unimaginable pain, tragedy and horror, and for continuing her husband’s legacy, we must remember to honor Erika Kirk. It’s hard to name her a winner of the year when she has lost so much in 2025. However, to us, a winner of the year is a person who made a difference in a positive and laudable way, and she has done so under incredible pressure and while facing extremely aggressive and despicable attacks.

Wingman Gifts & Supply

Wingman delafield
Steve nelson, duaine jackson, wingman gifts and supply, delafield, wi

This wonderful small business in Delafield champions men. It’s not really the products – the unique gifts for men – that connote the bygone, although some do (like the stainless steel silvertip shave brushes). It’s the ethos. You will be greeted promptly by Steve Nelson, the owner, or Duaine Jackson, a retired firefighter from California who stopped in as a customer and loved it so much he decided to work there. They will tell you about the carefully curated products and actually show you how to use them, and if you have a son, they will do the same for him. We need more people championing men these days and being positive role models for young men, and these two fit the bill. Read more here.

Judges David Maas & Zach Wittchow

David maas
David maas with brad schimel.

Conservatives Maas and Wittchow won judicial elections in Waukesha County against two Evers appointees.

Nicholas Jacobs and Ekaterina Diestler

Remember these two? Elon Musk came to Wisconsin, and they walked away millionaires after he handed them each $1 million checks. Jacobs was chairman of the Wisconsin College Republicans. They were probably the only two people in Wisconsin who won as a result of the state Supreme Court election (the rest of us got Susan Crawford.)

Preserve MKE

Milwaukee museum

This group of local citizens is fighting tirelessly to preserve the iconic and beloved Milwaukee Public Museum and its exhibits, like the Streets of Old Milwaukee, the European Village, and the historic murals and dioramas. They even created a non-profit to do so.

“We are a group of regular citizens and people who started a non-profit organization because we care about the museum built and paid for by the people of Milwaukee. As time goes by, we are learning Milwaukee Public Museum, Inc (hereafter MPM, Inc) and several politicians have not listened to the people about how much we love and want to preserve our museum and exhibits. We want it all saved,” they wrote. “Preserve MKE is comprised of thousands of everyday citizens, alumni of the Museum, as well as their families. We know getting the truth out about OUR Museum and fighting to preserve it is crucial for Milwaukee.”

Lightning & Thunder

The iconic Milwaukee singing duo and Neil Diamond “interpreters” are finally getting their due through the new movie, Song Sung Blue. Beloved by audiences, it is bringing them the national fame that cruel twists of fate snatched away, even though Mike Sardina is no longer around to see it (but Claire is.) They are Milwaukee legends, and it’s a great movie that focuses on family, connection, and determination in the face of hardship. Thank you for making Milwaukee proud.

Wisconsin Sports Teams

One of our readers wrote: “Brewers made it to the NLCS. I’d consider them winners. Green Bay did a great job hosting the NFL draft.”

Assembly Leaders Call for Dugan’s Resignation, Threaten Impeachment

(The Center Square) – Wisconsin’s Republican Assembly leaders say they will begin impeachment proceedings if Milwaukee County Judge Hannah Dugan does not resign from her post immediately following a felony obstruction conviction Thursday evening.

Dugan was found guilty of obstructing as Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers were attempting to arrest a defendant in her court outside of the courtroom.

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester, and Assembly Majority Leader Tyler August, R-Walworth, sent a statement Friday noting that the last Wisconsin judge was impeached in 1853 but that the Assembly would begin impeachment proceedings if Dugan doesn’t resign.

Dugan’s legal team indicated Thursday that she would appeal the jury’s decision.

“Under a 1976 Attorney General Opinion, Democrat Bronson La Follette stated that when a State Senator was convicted of a felony, a vacancy was created, and the Senator ‘was effectually divested of any right or title to the office. His status with reference to the office was fixed at the time of his conviction,’ the leaders wrote. “Such is the case here, and Judge Dugan must recognize that the law requires her resignation.

“Wisconsinites deserve to know their judiciary is impartial and that justice is blind. Judge Hannah Dugan is neither, and her privilege of serving the people of Wisconsin has come to an end.”

The jury found Dugan not guilty of a misdemeanor charge of concealing related to defendant Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, who was later arrested on the street outside the courthouse and has since been deported.

The obstruction charge could lead to up to five years in prison.

The Assembly leaders cited the Wisconsin constitution, which says “‘[n]o person convicted of a felony, in any court within the United States, no person convicted in federal court of a crime designated, at the time of commission, under federal law as a misdemeanor involving a violation of public trust and no person convicted, in a court of a state, of a crime designated, at the time of commission, under the law of the state as a misdemeanor involving a violation of public trust shall be eligible to any office of trust, profit or honor in this state unless pardoned of the conviction.”

“While we are disappointed in today’s outcome, the failure of the prosecution to secure convictions on both counts demonstrates the opportunity we have to clear Judge Dugan’s name and show she did nothing wrong in the matter,” her legal team said after the verdict was read. “We have planned for this potential outcome and our defense of Judge Dugan is just beginning.”

Milwaukee Judge Hannah Dugan Guilty of Felony Obstruction During ICE Arrest

(The Center Square) – Milwaukee Judge Hannah Dugan was found guilty of a felony charge of obstruction by a jury Thursday in a case involving the judge’s actions related to a defendant in her court that Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers were attempting to arrest outside of the courtroom.

The jury returned the verdict at 8:38 p.m. Central Time.

The jury found Dugan not guilty of a misdemeanor charge of concealing related to defendant Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, who was later arrested on the street outside the courthouse and has since been deported.

The obstruction charge could lead to up to a $100,000 fine and a year in prison.

“While we are disappointed in today’s outcome, the failure of the prosecution to secure convictions on both counts demonstrates the opportunity we have to clear Judge Dugan’s name and show she did nothing wrong in the matter,” her legal team said. “We have planned for this potential outcome and our defense of Judge Dugan is just beginning.”

Video from the courthouse depicts Dugan speaking with ICE officers in the hallway outside her courtroom and defendant Flores-Ruiz walking through a back hallway with a person identified in an affidavit as his attorney before heading to an elevator and then being chased down and arrested on the street outside of the courthouse.

FBI, DOJ Foil Plot For New Year’s Eve Bombings in Southern California

Four alleged members of a pro-Palestine terror group were arrested in connection with alleged plans for New Year’s Eve bombings across Southern California.

Authorities announced the arrests during a news conference Monday with First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli, FBI Assistant Director in Charge Akil Davis and Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna.

Essayli said all four suspects are from the Los Angeles area. He said one suspect created a plan to bomb five or more locations across Los Angeles and Orange County, with step-by-step instructions on building improvised explosive devices.

The arrests were made last week in Lucerne Valley, which is east of Los Angeles.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI prevented the bombings.

“The Turtle Island Liberation Front — a far-left, pro-Palestine, anti-government, and anti-capitalist group — was preparing to conduct a series of bombings against multiple targets in California beginning on New Year’s Eve,” Bondi posted on X. “The group also planned to target ICE agents and vehicles.”

Bondi credited “an incredible effort” and "intense investigation" by the FBI and the U.S, Attorney’s Offices for foiling the plot.

“We will continue to pursue these terror groups and bring them to justice,” Bondi said.

Wisconsin All-Terrain, Utility Vehicles Registration Loophole Closed

(The Center Square) – Wisconsin all-terrain and utility task vehicle drivers now must follow Wisconsin laws on where they can drive the vehicles and must pay trail registration fees regardless of where the vehicle is registered.

The bill was recently signed into law by Gov. Tony Evers and it became Wisconsin Act 64.

The law requires any ATV or UTV to follow state law based upon how Wisconsin would classify the vehicle regardless of what the title says for the state where the vehicle is registered.

Lawmakers said the goal of the bill was to close a loophole where Wisconsin UTV and ATV owners would register a vehicle in South Dakota and Montana but drive it in Wisconsin.

“They’re contacting people in Wisconsin and saying ‘Hey, if you register your UTV to an LLC in Montana or South Dakota, we can license that as a motor vehicle, not as an ATV or UTV,’” sponsor Sen. Howard Marklein, R-Spring Green, said during a public hearing on the bill. “And, because of that, they tell Wisconsin residents that you can now use this motor vehicle on any road in the state of Wisconsin.”

The current system of UTV and ATV routes and trails in the state and laws on using those vehicles are locally regulated and usage is determined on the local level.

The new law allows nonresidents access to all Wisconsin ATV and UTV trails and approved routes with a nonresident trail pass.

The registration system is a tax that allows ATV and UTV owners to pay their way by paying for the trail system, Wisconsin ATV Association President Randy Harden said during a public hearing. This means it is important that out-of-state vehicle owners also pay for using the system.

Thousands of Afghan Refugees Qualified For Slew of Costly Benefits

Tens of thousands of Afghan evacuees, including the gunman charged in the shootings of two National Guard members, killing one just blocks from the White House, were eligible for a slew of benefits, including housing and medical at the expense of the American taxpayer.

Following the pullout of American forces from Afghanistan in 2021, the Biden administration admitted nearly 200,000 evacuees between 2021 and 2023, including two recently arrested on terrorism charges. Through various reports and testimony by government officials, it was revealed that many of the Afghan nationals couldn’t be properly vetted.

Afghans who entered the U.S. on a Special Immigrant Visa (SIV), under a special immigrant parole (SQ/SI), and were granted humanitarian parole as part of the Biden Administration’s Operation Allies Welcome were eligible for over a dozen taxpayer benefits, many continuing four years later.

The benefits include: Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Women, Infants and Children (WIC), HUD Public Housing and Section 8 housing vouchers, emergency Medicaid, Affordable Care Act health plans and subsidies, full-scope Medicaid, Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), federal student aid and Pell grants, REAL ID, Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act services, refugee resettlement programs through the Office of Refugee Resettlement and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), according to the National Immigration Law Center.

For those who didn’t qualify for SSI or TANF, refugees were eligible for up to 12 months of Refugee Cash Assistance (RCA) through the ORR.

In addition, many refugees qualified for employment assistance through Refugee Support Services, which included: childcare, transportation, “employability services,” job training and preparation, job search assistance, placement and retention, English language training, translation and interpreter services and case management, according to the Administration for Children and Families Office of Refugee Resettlement.

The ORR also noted that “some clients may be eligible for specialized programs such as health services, technical assistance for small business start-ups and financial savings.”

Many refugees also qualified for “immigration-related legal assistance” to assist them “on their pathway to obtaining a permanent status.”

Despite the multitude of services provided to Afghan refugees, “they are less likely to be proficient in English, have lower educational attainment, and lower labor force participation” compared to other immigrants in the U.S., according to the Migration Policy Institute. Additionally, “compared to both the native born and the overall foreign-born population, they are much more likely to be living in poverty.”

The institute noted that Afghans “tend to have lower educational attainment” compared to American and foreign-born populations, citing a 2022 statistic showing 28% of Afghan immigrants age 25 and older “reported having at least a bachelor’s degree” as compared to 36% of Americans and 35% of all foreign-born populations.

While 29% of Afghan adults reported having less than a high school diploma, compared to 25% of other immigrant populations, there were some slight improvements among those who arrived in the U.S. between 2020 and 2022, with 36% having at least a four-year degree. However, that figure is 12 points less than other immigrant populations arriving during the same period.

The institute highlighted the “relatively low labor force participation rate” of Afghan immigrants ages 16 and older, showing that in 2022, 61% were in the civilian labor market, compared to 67% of other immigrant populations and 63% of U.S.-born individuals.

Afghan immigrants have a higher poverty rate compared to the American and foreign-born populations. As of 2022, 39% of Afghan nationals were living in poverty, compared to 12% of Americans and 14% of other immigrant populations.

Among the many benefits Afghan refugees are eligible to receive, one of the most costly may be housing in the form of public housing and the Section 8 program.

The institute showed that a majority of immigrants from Afghanistan are concentrated in some of the regions with the highest housing costs in the nation, including the metro areas of Washington, D.C., Sacramento, San Fransico, Los Angeles, New York City, Seattle and San Diego.

When asked if Afghan refugees are still receiving housing benefits, a HUD official told The Center Square that the department “is working in coordination with appropriate agencies to align the Department’s guidance related to immigration status to ensure taxpayer-funded benefits are not used for any unintended purpose.”

Adding to housing benefits, The Center Square reported Tuesday exclusively that amid a national housing crisis, the Biden administration’s Department of Housing and Urban Development produced guidelines encouraging property owners to forgo some fair housing practices to favor Afghan refugees, which the Trump administration directed to be terminated.

The Center Square obtained a HUD directive from the Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity rescinding the Biden-era guidance document, “Operation Allies Welcome: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on Fair Housing Issues,” and withdrawing from a FHEO guidance document “Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Renting to Refugees and Eligible Newcomers,” which the agency claims violates the Fair Housing Act.

HUD Secretary Scott Turner argues the Biden-era guidelines prioritized nearly 200,000 Afghan refugees who were admitted following the 2021 pullout of American forces from Afghanistan by encouraging landlords and property owners to forgo credit checks, occupancy limitations, and engage in targeted marketing toward Afghans.

“After President Biden’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, his administration made a bad situation worse by prioritizing housing assistance for Afghan refugees, who we now know were unvetted and unchecked,” Turner told The Center Square. “Since day one, our mission has been clear: to serve the American people and end the misuse and abuse of American taxpayer-funded resources. That is why we rescinded this Operation Allies Welcome guidance, which encouraged landlords and property owners to violate federal civil rights law to protect Afghan refugees. Under President Trump’s leadership, the days of putting Americans last is over.”
