A top Wisconsin columnist and podcaster says Attorney General Josh Kaul’s office is in “shambles” and “full of sloth,” and he’s predicting that, if Kaul wins in November, he will just quit anyway.
Mark Belling penned the column for the Waukesha Freeman. He is one of the most prominent and widely read columnists in Wisconsin, and he runs a popular podcast for WISN 1130 AM, where he used to host a popular radio show.
Belling cited Kaul’s mismanagement of the state crime lab, crime victim services, open government, and narcotics enforcement Up North.
Fond du Lac County DA Eric Toney, a Republican who is focusing on public safety and who was president of the Wisconsin District Attorneys Association and a Wisconsin District Attorney of the Year, is running against Kaul.
In the column, Belling argued that Democrat Kaul is “snoozing” while his office falls apart. Belling argued:
- “Every single major function” in Kaul’s office is “underperforming.”
- The crime lab is taking fewer cases and delaying important cases needed by law enforcement. (Last December, we reported that, based on Kaul’s OWN annual report, the latest available, “Cases accepted by the Wisconsin Crime Lab have taken a major nosedive under Attorney General Josh Kaul. Yet, Kaul’s crime labs are taking longer to process key evidence submitted by police agencies, including DNA, despite taking in FAR fewer cases.” See the documentation here.)
- Kaul’s open records office is in shambles, taking 18 months to fulfill requests. Belling’s claim is proven by data on Kaul’s own website. A core function of Kaul’s DOJ is being the top enforcer of open government, including open records and meetings. Kaul’s own data shows that one open records request has been pending since 2021 – that’s almost FIVE YEARS. The open records law requires government officials to respond to requests as soon as practical and without delay.
- He cites a Wisconsin Right Now article that posted a video showing a top tribal leader believed Kaul’s lack of narcotics enforcement Up North has cost lives. Read her comments and see the video here.
- He cites Kaul’s botched federal audit response into his crime victim services office. That imperiled drug, sexual assault, and domestic violent grants all over the state. Read the documentation here.
Belling argues that Kaul is so checked out that he predicts that “if he doesn’t lose, I think he will quit,” pointing out that Kaul’s own party didn’t want him to run for governor. According to Belling, the legacy media have refused to thoroughly cover Kaul’s incompetence.
